DUMBTIME
This video presents a series of moments in which waiting is the activity. Its an examination of the pressure on those moments in our contemporary environment. The pressure to occupy that ‘empty’ time, to fill it with productivity or to scroll social media. Anything but allowing that time to be a miniture escape from the pressures of the capitalist world view, of the farce of choice and participation, both of which are a mirage for voluntary productive digital labor. Encoding oneself in a continually updating algorithm, enriching the platforms that rely on the labor of the masses, so freely given. The reproduction of the capitalist ‘real’ is now made possible by the populace, but this time without the sale of labor, but rather the mass contribution of labor. Its also a mirror of fictitious finance. Its a ‘community’, a ‘world’ that is entirely virtual. The saddest irony is that so many millions complain about it.
This video puts the viewer on the spot. Watching the moments of waiting, voluntarily occupying the place of the shot. It converts that moment into one available for questioning and critique.
